Biden calls Assad's fall 'moment of historic opportunity' for Syria

U.S. President Joe Biden on Sunday called the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime a "moment of historic opportunity" for Syria.

“The fall of the regime is a fundamental act of justice,” Biden said in a statement from the White House. “It’s a moment of historic opportunity for the long-suffering people of Syria.”

"At long last, the Assad regime has fallen. This regime brutalized, tortured, and killed literally hundreds of thousands of innocent Syrians. The fall of the regime is a fundamental act of justice," he stated.

US will engage with all Syrian groups on transition

Meanwhile, he added that U.S. would engage with "all Syrian groups" over the political transition after the fall of president Bashar al-Assad.

"We will engage with all Syrian groups, including within the process led by the United Nations, to establish a transition away from the Assad regime toward independent, sovereign" Syria "with a new constitution," Biden said.

'US does not know Assad's location'

Additionally, Bidensaid the U.S. does not currently know Assad's location but said he "should be held accountable" for crimes that took place while he was in power.

However, Russia's state news agency TASS said Assad and his family arrived in Moscow, where they are granted political asylum.
