Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed his aides to begin preparations for early general elections, according to a report by the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth.
The report said Netanyahu is considering bringing forward elections currently scheduled for October next year, as his coalition government faces ongoing political deadlock.
According to Yedioth Ahronoth, Netanyahu is evaluating the early election option due to disagreements within the coalition over the state budget and a proposed military service bill that directly affects ultra-Orthodox Jewish citizens.
The report said these issues have created significant friction within the coalition, prompting Netanyahu to consider ending the government’s term earlier than planned.
While Netanyahu has publicly stated that the government will complete its full term, the newspaper reported that he has privately instructed his aides to begin work on preparations to move the elections forward.
According to the report, the general elections could be brought forward to June 2026.
Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister and the first to face trial while in office, has previously announced that he intends to run again in the next elections.
