Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stated on Friday that his country supports Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and national institutions, while rejecting Israeli attacks.

According to a statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdelatty met with his Syrian counterpart, Esad Hasan Sheiban, in Cairo on the sidelines of the Arab League Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. Developments in Syria were discussed during the meeting.

Abdelatty emphasized the importance of reaching a comprehensive political solution to strengthen Syria’s stability. He also condemned Israel’s repeated attacks on Syrian territory, describing them as clear violations of international law.

The Egyptian minister stressed that respect for Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty is imperative.

Background: Israeli attacks on Syria

Israel intensified air strikes on Syrian territory since late 2024, targeting military facilities, infrastructure, and civilian areas in the south of the country. Operations around the Golan Heights and Mount Hermon are seen as direct threats to Syria’s territorial integrity.

Recent developments include:

  • August 2025: Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani met with Israeli officials in Paris under U.S. mediation, calling for the revival of the 1974 ceasefire and a halt to the attacks.
  • July 2025: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that attacks on Syria would expand depending on the stance of the Damascus government, a statement regarded as a clear threat by Syria.

Syria views these attacks not only as military strikes but also as part of a broader geopolitical strategy aimed at dividing and weakening the country.

The new Syrian government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, has called for national unity against sectarian violence and foreign intervention.

Damascus has described Israeli strikes on Druze regions and SDF-held areas in the northeast as a “fragmentation policy.” SDF is an umbrella group dominated by the PKK terrorist group's Syrian offshoot, the YPG.
