The European Commission on Wednesday urged all state and non-state actors to respect international law and avoid actions that could escalate tensions in the Middle East, amid growing strain between the United States and Iran.

Speaking at a media briefing in Brussels, EU Commission spokesperson Anouar El Anouni said he would not comment on hypothetical scenarios but warned that any military escalation could have serious consequences for regional stability.

El Anouni stressed the European Union’s strong commitment to peace, security and stability in the Middle East, emphasizing that diplomacy remains essential.

“The EU urges all state and non-state actors to respect international law, act with restraint and avoid any actions that could escalate tensions in the Middle East,” he said.

Sovereignty and international law emphasized

El Anouni underlined that the principles of sovereignty and the United Nations Charter must be upheld under all circumstances.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have intensified following nationwide protests in Iran that erupted in late December over worsening economic and living conditions.

U.S. and Israeli pressure on Iran has increased during this period.

Statements by American and Israeli officials have also pointed to ambitions to see the fall of Iran’s political system, which has been in place since 1979.
