The Syrian News Channel, Alikhbaria, reported a large explosion on Wednesday caused by war remnants near Damascus International Airport in the southern part of the Syrian capital.
The cause of the explosion at the military base is still unknown, Anadolu Agency reported.
The Syrian Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement that the sounds heard near the airport were the result of detonating war remnants.
The authority added that the incident occurred in an area more than 20 kilometers from the airport.
It also confirmed that the situation at Damascus International Airport is completely safe and that air traffic is continuing normally and regularly without any disruption.
This comes just one day after Israeli forces carried out an airdrop operation at sites in Jabal al-Mana in the Damascus countryside, accompanied by heavy airstrikes that paralyzed movement in the area for hours.
This is not the first incident of its kind in Syria. Syrian media reported on Monday evening that an explosion was heard in the city, caused by the Syrian army’s engineering units detonating war remnants in the western Aleppo countryside.
Earlier incidents include an explosion on Aug. 17 in the Al-Maysar neighborhood. Investigations revealed that the perpetrator had a criminal record and a history of drug use.
Additionally, on July 11, an underground depot exploded in Al-Nayrab, east of Aleppo. The depot contained old munitions from the former regime. The blast left 14 civilians injured, with varying degrees of severity.
