German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius praised Türkiye’s significant contribution to European security following talks on Wednesday with his Turkish counterpart, Yasar Guler, in Berlin.
The ministers discussed developments in Ukraine and Syria, bilateral defense cooperation and preparations for the upcoming NATO summit during meetings at Germany’s Defense Ministry headquarters.
“Germany values Türkiye as an important ally that makes an essential contribution to European security,” Pistorius said in a ministry statement. “The Turkish armed forces contribute significantly to securing NATO’s southern flank.”
Pistorius underlined the shared security interests of the two NATO allies and said cooperation should be expanded beyond existing alliance frameworks.
“Germany and Türkiye have well-established security and defense relations within the alliance,” he said. “At the same time, we want to further strengthen our bilateral cooperation with Ankara.”
The talks reflected Berlin’s emphasis on reinforcing coordination with key allies as Europe faces heightened security challenges linked to Russia’s war in Ukraine and instability in the Middle East.
The ministers also reviewed agenda items for NATO’s upcoming summit in Ankara in July, according to the statement.
The summit is expected to focus on the alliance’s 360-degree approach to security, aimed at addressing threats from all directions and strengthening collective deterrence and defense.
