Lady Philippa Karsera Christodoulides, wife of Greek Cyprus Administration (GCA) leader Nikos Christodoulides, resigned from her position as board chairwoman of the Independent Social Support Agency (ISSB) following social media pressure against her and her family.

Karsera said in a written statement that "false reports, defamatory comments, and baseless behavioral allegations" about her and her children circulated on social media accounts within the past 24 hours.

"These shares were massively multiplied without passing through a critical filter, creating a serious risk. These attacks constitute a violation of fundamental human rights and contain clear defamation," Karsera stated.

She said "being the leader's spouse does not justify such attacks and that defending one's rights is not only a right but also an obligation." Karsera added that a legal proceedings have been initiated.

Campaign finance allegations in Greek Cyprus

Allegations emerged that Christodoulides exceeded the €1 million spending limit for his 2023 presidential campaign through illegal methods.

An eight-minute video leaked online Jan. 8 featured former Energy Minister George Lakkotrypis stating: "In elections, there is approximately a €1 million upper limit. Sometimes we need cash to go above this budget. That is why they spend the money as cash."

The video shows that when Christodoulides needed cash, he contacted Presidential Office Director Haralambos Haralambous, who is married to Karsera's sister Kristia Karsera. The video claimed Christodoulides received funds through Karsera under the name of "donations."

Government response and denial

Former Energy Minister Lakkotripis denied the video's authenticity in a written statement, claiming the video was leaked from a fake social media account and that his statements were taken out of context and fabricated.

"The video is false. My statements were taken out of context and constructed to harm both me and the country. I have filed a complaint regarding this matter," he said.

He noted the video was released one day after Greek Cyprus' EU Council Presidency opening ceremony, saying the timing was "no accident."
