Türkiye plays an important and active role in the Development Road Project, Iraqi Transport Minister Razzaq Muhaibis al-Saadawi said Tuesday.
Speaking to Turkish news agency Anadolu about the joint Türkiye-Iraq initiative, al-Saadawi said, “The friendly and brotherly Republic of Türkiye has a major role in the Development Road Project. Iraq and Türkiye both have excellent geographical positions—Türkiye is the gateway to Europe, and Iraq is the gateway to the Gulf.”
He said the project represents an integrated framework of cooperation between Iraq and Türkiye, adding that it will turn both countries into bridge nations linking East and West.
“The Development Road is a fully integrated economic project that will cover agriculture, industry, trade, oil, energy, communications, transportation, and other logistics services,” al-Saadawi said.
“Along the corridor from the port of Faw to Türkiye, there will be industrial zones and various investment projects. Therefore, Türkiye’s role in the Development Road Project is both significant and dynamic.”
A senior Turkish official said earlier in October that the Development Road Project will connect Türkiye to Gulf countries, the Indian Ocean and the Far East through Iraq.
Durmus Unuvar, Türkiye’s deputy minister of transportation and infrastructure, said the initiative is more than a transportation project.
“The Development Road is the connection of Iraq’s Grand Faw Port with Europe via Türkiye through railways and highways,” Unuvar told Anadolu.
Unuvar said Türkiye has already begun the necessary investments for the project, emphasizing that Ankara supports it as a means to boost Iraq’s development.
Al-Saadawi earlier said that the Grand Faw Port project is the main artery of the Development Road.
“The Grand Faw Port is the project of the nation’s will and the people,” he said, adding, “In this context, we will obtain revenues outside oil that have not been encountered before.”
He said the Development Road Project will “redraw the face of Iraq’s economy” and serve as a cornerstone of regional cooperation.
Also known as the New Silk Road, the Development Road Project involves cooperation among Türkiye, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
The Grand Faw Port, located at the entrance of the Khor Abdullah cape of the Basra Gulf, will be one of the Middle East’s largest ports and serve as a major node connecting Asia to Europe through Iraq and Türkiye.
