President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will travel to Egypt on Monday (Oct. 13) to attend an international Gaza peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, which will bring together over 20 world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump.
The summit aims to "end the war in the Gaza Strip, enhance efforts to bring peace and stability to the Middle East, and usher in a new phase of regional security and stability," according to an Egyptian presidential statement.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Trump will co-chair the summit, with more than 20 leaders attending the Gaza Summit, including Erdogan.
The summit comes following Trump's vision for achieving peace in the region and his efforts to end conflicts around the world, the statement said.
Trump announced Wednesday (Oct. 8) that Israel and Hamas agreed to the first phase of a 20-point plan he laid out on Sept. 29 to bring a ceasefire to Gaza, release all Israeli captives being held there in exchange for around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the entire Gaza Strip.
Negotiations continued in Egypt, where the agreement was signed.
The deal came into force at 12:00 p.m. local time on Friday, after Israeli government approval in the early hours of Oct. 10.
The ceasefire took effect at 12:00 p.m. the same day after the Israeli military withdrew to the "yellow line" as specified in the agreement.
A second phase of the plan calls for the establishment of a new governing mechanism in Gaza without Hamas' participation, the formation of a security force comprising Palestinians and troops from Arab and Islamic countries, and the disarmament of Hamas.
Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed over 67,600 Palestinians in the enclave, most of them women and children, and rendered it uninhabitable.
Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip from Oct. 8, 2023, until the ceasefire agreement killed 67,682 people and wounded 170,033.
