Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has claimed that renowned filmmaker Emir Kusturica was involved in what he described as a “well-organized coup attempt” against his government.

Vucic claimed that the alleged conspiracy spread across public institutions—including universities, police, healthcare and utility infrastructure—and was financed and politically engineered from abroad.

Allegations include opposition and foreign involvement

Though he did not disclose specific sources or evidence, Vucic insisted these allegations are based on intelligence reports signaling coordinated attempts aimed at overthrowing the state.

The accusations took place against a backdrop of sustained anti-corruption protests, ignited by the collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad in November 2024, which killed 16 people. University students have led near-daily demonstrations calling for justice and institutional accountability.

The protests, which have continued for over eight months, have triggered nationwide road blockades and thousands of arrests.
