Several U.S. service members were injured in Iranian attacks on Jordanian military bases this week, multiple U.S. officials told CBS News, as Jordan separately said it intercepted 10 Iranian missiles targeting the kingdom early Saturday.
According to CBS News, Iran attacked at least two Jordanian bases this week, and several American service members were injured after their facility was struck, according to multiple U.S. officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
No fatalities have been reported among Americans or Jordanians, according to CBS, and the severity of the injuries remains unclear.
U.S. warplanes frequently use Jordanian military installations, CBS noted.
The report followed statements from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that it had targeted U.S.-operated fighter jets and refueling aircraft at a base in Jordan with missiles and kamikaze drones, and a separate announcement from Iran that it had struck the Azraq (Muwaffaq Salti) Air Base in Jordan, which hosts U.S. troops and aircraft, with kamikaze drones.
Jordan's Armed Forces said Saturday that air defense units intercepted 10 Iranian missiles aimed at the kingdom during the early morning hours.
According to a statement from a military official at the General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces, carried by the Jordan News Agency.
The military said there were no casualties or property damage and that Royal Engineering Corps teams were deployed to collect missile debris that landed in various parts of the country and secure the affected areas under established protocols.
Iran said Friday it targeted U.S. military facilities in Jordan and Kuwait with attack drones as part of what it called the 14th phase of "Operation Thunder," according to a statement carried by Tasnim News Agency.
The army claimed drones struck an ammunition depot at the Al-Adire camp, buildings, ammunition storage facilities, and communications links at the Al-Salem base in Kuwait, as well as fuel tanks at Jordan's Azraq air base.
Regional tensions have escalated since February, when the U.S. and Israel launched an offensive against Iran, with Tehran retaliating with missile and drone strikes on Gulf nations hosting U.S. assets.
Iran and the U.S. signed a Pakistan-mediated Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last month aimed at ending the war, but tensions have escalated again in recent days over the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides continuing to exchange attacks.
