Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said Syria is advancing toward reintegration into the international community. “The success of any agreement with Israel will help spread peace in the region,” he said.

Al-Sharaa spoke at a panel at the Middle East Institute in New York. According to a post on the institute’s X account, he highlighted that Syria is accelerating diplomatic efforts and moving toward international engagement.

Diplomacy, not threats

Al-Sharaa emphasized, “We have initiated diplomatic efforts to reach a solution with Israel. We will not be a source of threat to anyone,” and noted Israel should return to the situation as of Dec. 8, 2024.

Unity and regional security

He warned that discussions of Syria’s division would harm neighboring countries, specifically Türkiye and Iraq. He added that the U.S. could help integrate Kurdish forces into the Syrian army.

“The stability of Syria is connected to its unity. The security of neighboring countries comes from Syria’s stability,” al-Sharaa said. “Syria wants to be equidistant from all countries. We will stand with everyone and never take sides against another.”
