In the opening matches of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, German powerhouse Bayern Munich secured a 2-1 away win against Spanish giants Real Madrid, while English club Arsenal edged Portuguese side Sporting 1-0 on the road.
The clash between two of Europe’s most successful clubs—Real Madrid, with 14 Champions League titles, and Bayern Munich, who have lifted the trophy 7 times—kicked off at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
Bayern Munich struck first through Colombian forward Luis Diaz in the 41st minute, leaving the hosts trailing at halftime. Shortly after the break, English striker Harry Kane extended Bayern’s lead, putting the German side firmly in control.
Despite a late comeback effort from French forward Kylian Mbappe, who scored for Real Madrid in the 74th minute, Bayern managed to hold on to their lead. Turkish international Arda Guler, playing for Real Madrid, was substituted in the 71st minute for teammate Brahim Diaz. Bayern’s victory gives them a significant advantage heading into the return leg in Germany.
Meanwhile, Arsenal traveled to Portugal to face Sporting CP. The English side found the breakthrough in stoppage time, with Kai Havertz scoring in the 90+1 minute to secure a slim 1-0 victory. This narrow win sets up a tense second leg back in London.
