At only 14 years old, Türkiye’s chess sensation Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus is already making waves on the international stage.
Competing in the prestigious FIDE Grand Swiss, Erdogmus produced a jaw-dropping performance against India’s Aditya Mittal, delivering checkmate in just six moves despite his opponent holding a huge material advantage with two queens, a rook, and extra pawns.
Former Indian national champion Praveen Thipsay could not hide his admiration, remarking that Erdogmus's game will “find its place in the textbooks of chess combinations.”
Indian media outlets have highlighted the young Turkish master’s calm execution and fearless play against more experienced rivals.
Erdogmus began the Grand Swiss ranked 52nd but has quickly established himself as a name to watch. In the previous round, he held reigning World Champion D. Gukesh to a perpetual check draw.

Beyond the classical board, he is already famous for defeating Magnus Carlsen multiple times and drawing against Hikaru Nakamura in online blitz battles, a feat that only a handful of players worldwide can claim.
Currently boasting an Elo rating of 2646, Erdogmus holds the highest rating ever achieved at his age. His trajectory is already being compared to Carlsen’s rise at 14, with analysts suggesting he could be on a similar path toward future world championship contention.
Under the guidance of Azerbaijan’s legendary GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Erdogmus continues to sharpen his tactical brilliance and positional understanding.
With his performances in the Grand Swiss, the young prodigy is now seen as a dark horse for the Candidates Tournament, the gateway to challenging for the World Championship.
If he maintains his form, Erdogmus could soon carry Türkiye to the very summit of world chess.
