Turkish tennis player Zeynep Sonmez has secured a place in the second round of the WTA 500 Merida Open in Merida, Mexico, following a commanding victory in the opening round.
Ranked 81st in the WTA singles standings, Sonmez faced Canadian competitor Cadence Brace, who holds the 204th position in the rankings. Sonmez defeated Brace in straight sets, 6–2, 6–0, to advance to the next stage of the tournament.
The Turkish tennis player, who received a wildcard entry into the WTA 500 event, dominated the match from the outset and did not concede a game in the second set.
In the second round, the 23-year-old Sonmez will meet Ann Li of the United States, the tournament’s No. 3 seed. This encounter marks a rematch of the 2024 Merida Open final, where Sonmez finished as runner-up to Li.
Last year, Sonmez captured her first WTA singles title at the Merida Open, which was then categorized as a WTA 250 event. With the tournament now elevated to WTA 500 status.
