Greek government announces measures against protests
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, speaking in the Greek parliament, announced the measures the government will take to end the two-week-long farmers’ protests
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced new measures to be taken by the government in order to end the two-week protests of farmers to draw attention to the increasing problems in the agricultural sector.
In his speech at the Greek parliament, Mitsotakis stated that the refund of the special consumption tax applied to the diesel used by farmers will continue this year.
Stating that the Greek Electricity Authority will apply a 10 percent discount to farmers in May-September, Mitsotakis announced that farmers will be facilitated in paying their debts to some institutions.
On the other hand, the farmers, who are determined to continue their protests, are planning to hold a big demonstration tomorrow on the occasion of the “Agrotica” fair to be held at the Thessaloniki International Fair Centre.
The farmers have been organising protests in various cities for two weeks, demanding compensation for their crops damaged in the floods of September 2023, the launch of projects to protect crops against adverse weather conditions, and a reduction in production costs.
