Thousand of Haitians protest against the unelected government
Haitians take to the street to protest the unelected government of Ariel Henry, who came the power after the assassination of country’s last president, Jovenel Moise
Thousans of Haitians gathered in the streets to demonstrate against the unelected government of Prime Minister Ariel Henry on Monday.
Protesters set fire to car tires, resulting in streets being engulfed in gray smoke. The national police deployed tear gas to disperse the protesters.
Henry assumed office following the assassination of the country’s former president, Jovenel Moise, in 2021. Since then, the gangs have formed their own alliances, known as G-9 and G-Pep.
His administration has witnessed the proliferation of violent gang alliances, which now exert control over much of the capital and have expanded their influence into nearby regions.
Earlier this year, the leader of Human Rights Watch approximated that around 300,000 individuals have been displaced within the country due to ongoing violence.
According to the United Nations, approximately 170,000 children have been displaced internally, and nearly half of the population is experiencing hunger.
