The Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield (FSHAA) commander ordered an immediate lockdown of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team (2ABCT) area, including Wright and Evans Army Airfields.
“Lock down your facility immediately, stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors. Keep telephone lines open and report accountability to your leadership,” the FSHAA posted on its verified Facebook page.
“The incident remains under investigation, and no additional information will be released until the investigation is complete,” the FSHAA said.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump has been briefed on the situation. “The White House is monitoring the situation,” she wrote on X.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has also been informed, according to Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell. “We are monitoring the situation,” Parnell posted on X.
The lockdown was issued at 11:04 a.m. Eastern Time (1504GMT). Base officials said law enforcement is on the scene, but no further details have been released regarding the suspect’s status or potential motive.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said his office is “in close contact” with military and local law enforcement.
“We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same,” Kemp said in a post on X.
The FBI’s Savannah office said it is coordinating with the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division and is prepared to assist as needed.
Located about 40 miles (64 kilometers) southwest of Savannah, Fort Stewart is home to the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Division and serves as a key training and deployment base for both active duty and reserve units.
