United States President Donald Trump on Friday announced that a new round of trade talks with China will be held in London on Monday, June 9, following a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping aimed at easing tensions in the ongoing tariff dispute.

“The meeting should go very well,” Trump said, adding that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will meet a Chinese delegation in the British capital.

'Meeting should go very well'

“I am pleased to announce that Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and United States Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer, will be meeting in London on Monday, June 9, 2025, with Representatives of China, with reference to the Trade Deal,” Trump said on social media. “The meeting should go very well.”

The announcement came one day after Trump held a 90-minute phone conversation with Xi. Trump described the discussion as productive, saying it “resulted in a very positive conclusion for both Countries” as both sides look to end the long-running trade rift.

Negotiations between Washington and Beijing stalled after a May 12 agreement to reduce tariffs and deescalate tensions. That deal included a 90-day suspension of most tariffs and the rollback of several measures imposed since April.

However, the agreement quickly began to fray, with both sides accusing each other of non-compliance. Trump claimed that China failed to honor its commitments, while Beijing dismissed the allegations as “groundless” and threatened countermeasures to defend its economic interests.
