Iranian-backed groups stationed in Deir ez-Zor launch rocket on the Koniko Gas Plant

Iranian-backed groups carried out a rocket attack on the Koniko Gas Plant in eastern Syria, where U.S. forces are stationed.

The attack, launched from the western bank of the Euphrates River in Deir ez-Zor, resulted in smoke near the .

It is unknown whether there were any casualties in the attack and U.S. officials have not yet commented on the attack.

On Jan. 24, unidentified aircraft targeted military vehicles belonging to Iranian-backed groups allied with the Bashar al-Assad regime in Deir ez-Zor at a border crossing between Syria and Iraq.

Deir ez-Zor territories east of the Euphrates are occupied by the U.S.-backed PKK/YPG, while the Assad regime controls the provincial capital and surrounding areas.

The U.S. justifies its alliance with PKK/YPG against Daesh/ISIS, though Türkiye argues against using one terrorist group to combat another.

The PKK, labeled a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the U.S., and the EU, has been responsible for over 40,000 deaths in its 35-year campaign against Türkiye, with the YPG serving as its Syrian branch.
