The Pentagon has given the green light to the White House for supplying Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk missiles, according to officials familiar with the matter cited by CNN.

The Defense Department has made its decision regarding the transfer of long-range Tomahawks to Ukraine and signaled its approval to the White House. The final authorization for the foreign military sale now rests with President Donald Trump.

The Tomahawk missiles in question have a range of approximately 1,600 kilometers (roughly 1,000 miles).

Trump's stance on missile supply

Trump addressed the potential missile transfer during an early October meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House.

The president noted that the United States possesses "a large number of Tomahawks" that could be given to Ukraine, but said he preferred not to supply the missiles "because they don't want to give what's needed to protect the country (U.S.)."

When asked about the U.S. not approving the transfer, Zelenskyy responded: "We are not looking for ways to stop Putin and end this war without the U.S."

National media reports have indicated that during this period, the Trump administration has been preparing plans to rapidly provide the missiles to Ukraine "should Trump not take the transfer off the table and give the order."

The development represents a significant potential expansion of U.S. military support to Ukraine, as the long-range capability would allow Ukrainian forces to strike targets deep inside Russian territory.
