Protesters disrupt Trump campaign event ahead of Iowa caucus
A group of young protesters disrupts a campaign event by former US President Donald Trump in Iowa, chanting “Trump, climate criminal.”
On the eve of Iowa’s first-in-the-nation vote in the Republican presidential nomination race, a group of young protesters briefly disrupted a campaign event by former US President Donald Trump, chanting “Trump, climate criminal.”
The disturbance occurred at a venue filled with fervent Trump supporters, who responded with “USA, USA!” chants as security guards swiftly removed one protester holding a black-and-yellow banner bearing the same three words.
Amid the commotion, Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination, characterized one of the protesters as “young and immature” while being escorted out.
“They’re fighting oil,” Trump remarked. “They’re basically saying let’s close up on our country.”
The former president, who enjoys a significant lead in polls ahead of Monday’s Republican presidential caucuses in Iowa, has been a vocal skeptic of the scientific consensus attributing human activities to global warming. Trump took a controversial stance during his presidency by withdrawing the United States from the 2015 Paris climate agreement.
Vowing to prioritize the promotion of fossil fuel production if re-elected, Trump remains a divisive figure on environmental issues as he continues his campaign in the heartland of the Midwest. The disruption at the Iowa event highlights the ongoing clash between his policies and the concerns of those advocating for stronger climate action.
