North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the East Sea early Sunday, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said, marking Pyongyang’s first such test of the year.
The South Korean military confirmed detection of the launch but did not immediately disclose details regarding the missile’s type, range, or altitude.
The launch was the first ballistic missile test by North Korea since Nov. 7, 2025, when a similar projectile was fired into the same body of water.
“Our military is maintaining a readiness posture while closely monitoring the situation,” the JCS said in a brief statement, according to Yonhap News Agency.
South Korea’s military said it is working closely with U.S. forces to assess the launch and evaluate its potential implications for regional security.
The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said it was aware of the missile launch but stated that it does not pose an immediate threat to U.S. personnel, U.S. territory, or allied nations.
“The United States remains committed to the defense of the U.S. homeland and our allies in the region,” the command said in a statement posted on social media platform X.
