Russian Foreign Ministry expresses skepticism over Israel’s Gaza plan, citing potential conflicts with established international frameworks for Palestinian-Israeli settlement

Russia expressed skepticism on Wednesday regarding the feasibility of achieving lasting peace in the region based on Israel’s proposed plan for Gaza.

Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, highlighted the challenge in achieving sustainable peace, noting that while the ministry has not yet reviewed the full document outlining Israel’s plan for Gaza, available information suggests it contradicts the established international legal framework for the Palestinian-Israeli settlement.

“History has shown that any proposals concerning the Middle East settlement that run counter to the U.N. Security Council resolutions, which call for the establishment of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, coexisting peacefully and securely with Israel, are likely to face difficulties,” Zakharova emphasized.

She emphasized that establishing a lasting cease-fire in Gaza is a top priority, as it is a crucial step toward creating the necessary conditions for a comprehensive resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

“We are working diligently alongside other nations with similar views in the UN Security Council toward this goal. Unfortunately, our efforts are being hindered by the U.S.,” Zakharova lamented.

Zakharova also stressed the importance of ensuring the political and geographical unity of Palestinians, including those in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank of the Jordan River. She highlighted the significance of implementing Russia’s initiative for conducting ministerial consultations among key external stakeholders involved in addressing the Middle East settlement issues.

“Without achieving this unity, there is a risk of the conflict zone reverting to its state prior to October 7, which would inevitably lead to renewed violence, more casualties, and continued destabilization of the entire Middle East region,” she cautioned.
