U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in Budapest, Hungary, to discuss an end to Russia's war in Ukraine after high-level delegations hold talks next week.
Trump announced the planned meeting on his Truth Social platform following a telephone conversation with Putin.
"President Putin and I will then meet in an agreed upon location, Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can bring this 'inglorious' war, between Russia and Ukraine, to an end," Trump wrote.
Trump said he had a "very productive" telephone conversation with Putin and that Putin congratulated him on Middle East peace efforts.
The U.S. delegation for next week's discussions will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is also serving as the president's national security adviser, Trump said. A location for the delegation meeting has yet to be decided.
Trump said the delegations from the United States and Russia would hold a consultation meeting next week "to see if we can bring this 'inglorious' war, between Russia and Ukraine, to an end."
Trump is slated to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Friday. "President Zelenskyy and I will be meeting tomorrow, in the Oval Office, where we will discuss my conversation with President Putin, and much more," he added.
"I believe great progress was made with today’s telephone conversation," Trump added.
Trump noted that Middle East peace efforts would contribute to negotiations aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war.
Trump emphasized his belief that the telephone conversation with Putin represented significant progress toward resolving the conflict. He indicated that discussions with Zelenskyy on Friday would cover the substance of his conversation with Putin and other matters related to ending the war.
Trump stated that both he and Putin agreed that Middle East peace efforts would be beneficial to negotiations aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war.
