Türkiye reaffirmed its vigorous support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing dialogue and diplomacy as the most effective way to end the conflict, Ankara’s ambassador to the United States said in Washington.

Türkiye’s Ambassador to the U.S., Sedat Onal, said Ankara considers Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity critically important for the stability of the country and the wider region.

“We believe that the most effective way for ending the conflict is dialogue and diplomacy,” Onal said, adding that Türkiye supports regional and international efforts aimed at ending the conflict.

The remarks were delivered at an event related to the Sudan Humanitarian Fund at the U.S. Institute of Peace, hosted by Massad Boulos and attended by Tom Fletcher, senior U.S. officials, and diplomats from several countries.

Türkiye highlights humanitarian assistance efforts

Onal said Türkiye’s sole aim under the current circumstances is to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people and support Sudanese authorities in addressing urgent humanitarian needs.

He noted that Türkiye was among the first countries to provide humanitarian assistance after the conflict erupted in April 2023 between Sudan’s army and the RSF, which has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions.

Following developments in El-Fasher, the capital of the North Darfur state, Onal said Türkiye sent 30,000 tents on three vessels last December in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration.

Turkish aid continues amid ongoing conflict

Onal said the Turkish Red Crescent and several Turkish NGOs continue to provide aid, including food, shelter and hygiene supplies, across different regions of Sudan.

He added that Türkiye will continue in-kind humanitarian contributions in the coming weeks.

The Washington donor meeting came as the United States seeks to mobilize up to $1.5 billion in new pledges for Sudan amid renewed efforts to secure a humanitarian truce ahead of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
