A Turkish investigative team landed in the Bangladeshi capital Sunday to assist authorities in determining the cause of a devastating fire that shut down operations at the country's primary airport and destroyed imported goods stored in its cargo facility.
The eight-member delegation, headed by First Degree Chief Superintendent Oykun Ilgun, met with Sheikh Bashiruddin, adviser to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, according to a ministry statement. The meeting focused on coordinating the investigation into the Oct. 18 blaze at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport's cargo village.
Bashiruddin welcomed the Turkish support, stating that the cooperation will "strengthen the mutual relations between the two countries and will play an important role in advancing the investigation activities," the ministry said.

The fire, which erupted in the cargo section where imported goods are primarily warehoused, forced a complete suspension of flight operations at Bangladesh's main aviation hub. Firefighters deployed 37 units to battle the flames, working alongside personnel from the Bangladesh Army, Air Force and Navy to bring the situation under control.
All imported goods stored in the affected cargo area were damaged in the incident, though authorities have not yet released estimates of the financial losses.
The airport fire marks the third major industrial blaze in Bangladesh this month. Two earlier fires at factories in Dhaka and the port city of Chattogram claimed at least 16 lives, raising concerns about fire safety standards in the South Asian nation's commercial and industrial facilities.
