The top diplomats of the United Arab Emirates and the United States on Friday underscored the need for an immediate and “unconditional” ceasefire in Sudan, welcoming former President Donald Trump’s announcement that he intends to intervene to help end the conflict.
The UAE Foreign Ministry said Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed spoke by phone with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to review “the tragic developments of the civil war in Sudan” and reaffirmed the urgency of halting hostilities and ensuring unhindered humanitarian access for civilians.
During the call, bin Zayed welcomed Trump’s recent statements “calling for an end to the horrific atrocities committed against civilians during the civil war, which has been ongoing for over two years, and his leading efforts aimed at achieving stability in Sudan,” the ministry said.
According to a State Department readout, Rubio and bin Zayed “continued discussions on our collective efforts to achieve a humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan.”
“The Secretary and Sheikh Abdullah reaffirmed the strategic relationship between the United States and the UAE,” it added.
On Wednesday, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that the United States would work with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and other regional partners to end “tremendous atrocities” taking place in Sudan.
His remarks came after meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who reportedly urged Trump to help resolve the crisis.
Sudan’s humanitarian emergency has worsened since April 2023, when the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began fighting a war that has defied both regional and international mediation efforts. The conflict has killed thousands and displaced millions.
