The United Nations on Friday strongly condemned large-scale Russian missile and drone strikes across Ukraine that killed two people and damaged the Azerbaijani Embassy in Kyiv, calling the attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure violations of international humanitarian law.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned Russia's attacks on various regions of Ukraine, according to his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, who briefed reporters on the latest developments in the ongoing war. The strikes injured numerous civilians in addition to the two fatalities.

An Iskander-type missile struck the grounds of the Azerbaijani Embassy during the barrage, partially destroying a section of the embassy's perimeter wall and damaging buildings, service vehicles, the administrative building and the consular section.

"Attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure violate international humanitarian law," Dujarric said. "These attacks are unacceptable wherever they occur and must stop immediately."

Azerbaijan summons Russian ambassador over embassy damage

In response to the embassy strike, Azerbaijani officials summoned Russian Ambassador to Baku Mikhail Yevdokimov to the Foreign Ministry, where they presented him with a formal note of protest over the incident.

The damage to the diplomatic compound marks the third time this year that Azerbaijan's embassy in Kyiv has been affected by Russian attacks. The mission previously sustained damage on January 2, 2024, and again on August 28.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which began in Feb. 2022, has involved sustained bombardment of Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. International humanitarian law prohibits deliberate attacks on civilian objects and requires parties to a conflict to distinguish between civilian and military targets.
