Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Saturday that he will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly next week.
The meeting comes as Russia intensified attacks across Ukraine, firing 40 missiles and around 580 drones overnight in one of its largest aerial barrages to date. At least three people were killed and dozens more were wounded, according to Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy said the talks with Trump will cover Western-backed security guarantees for Ukraine and additional sanctions on Russia. Kyiv has repeatedly called for guarantees to prevent future Russian attacks, while Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that any Western troops in Ukraine would be considered legitimate targets.
“We expect sanctions if there is no meeting between the leaders or, for example, no ceasefire,” Zelenskyy said in a statement released by the Ukrainian presidency. “We are ready for a meeting with Putin. I have spoken about this. Both bilateral and trilateral. He is not ready.”
In the latest attacks, a missile carrying cluster munitions struck an apartment building in the central city of Dnipro, Zelenskyy said, posting images of burning cars, damaged buildings, and rescuers evacuating civilians.
In the Dnipropetrovsk region, the strikes killed one person and wounded 26, including one man in serious condition, according to Sergiy Lysak, head of the regional military administration.
The strikes occurred a day after three Russian fighter jets violated Estonian airspace, an allegation Moscow denied. Concerns are rising in the West over potential provocations, following reports that roughly 20 Russian drones recently flew over Poland. Zelenskyy reiterated the need for “joint solutions” with other countries to intercept drones targeting Ukraine.
