Antalya, one of the world's major tourism destinations, has welcomed more than 10 million foreign tourists since the beginning of the year.
Most tourists came from Russia, Germany and the United Kingdom.
Antalya, which hosted more than 10 million foreign tourists between Jan. 1 and Aug. 21, is also preparing to host the 77th International Astronautical Congress as well as the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Hotel occupancy rates in the city are expected to be at high levels during both events. Kaan Kasif Kavaloglu, head of the Mediterranean Touristic Hotels and Investors Association, stated that tourist numbers are down 6% compared with last year, and that the sector is working to get through the season in the best possible way.
Kavaloglu said the city could see a loss of around 1 million tourists by the end of the year, adding, "We attach great importance to the number of tourists coming to Antalya. In October, we will hold the 77th International Astronautical Congress at the NEST Congress Center in Belek, Antalya.''
''We place great importance on bringing together all stakeholders from that sector in Antalya and Türkiye. COP31, which will take place Nov. 9-20, will be one of the largest events Türkiye has ever hosted,'' he stated.
''Under the coordination of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, municipalities, local governments, the private sector and civil society organizations are all working together to ensure COP31 concludes successfully," Kavaoglu added.
The head of the Mediterranean Touristic Hotels and Investors Association said intensive preparations are underway at the EXPO site for COP31, describing it as a highly significant investment for Antalya that will provide major benefits to the city in every area.
Describing COP31 as a lasting investment for Antalya, Kavaloglu said, "Once COP31 has taken place, we will have a very powerful marketing tool at our disposal to help bring similar events to Antalya in the future."
Ismail Caglar, general manager of Ic Hotels Green Palace and Villas, said the winter season had gone very well this year, though he noted that war and geopolitical developments in neighboring countries had an impact during May and June.
Caglar said occupancy rates rose during the summer period, stating, "Our occupancy rates rose in July and August. What's different this year is that there has been significant activity in the domestic market. Hotels in particular in Antalya's key areas have filled up completely. Occupancy rates are expected to remain at this level until the first week of September. For now, we are feeling positive."
Noting that the 77th International Astronautical Congress and COP31, both scheduled for the end of the tourism season, are important for the sector, Caglar said, "Very significant reservations have been received, particularly for the Belek and Kundu areas, where demand has been high. We are excitedly looking forward to these two major events."
