Türkiye will increase the contactless payment limit without PIN entry from ₺1,500 ($34.75) to ₺2,500 ($57.90) starting January 15, according to information shared by the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK) with banks.
BDDK informed banks that the previous limit took effect on July 1, 2024. The regulator updated the ceiling after a period of one and a half years. The new limit will apply nationwide from January 15.
The rule covers contactless payments made with physical cards and mobile devices. Transactions above ₺2,500 will still require PIN verification. Payments below this threshold will continue to be processed without PIN entry.
Contactless payment limits without PIN are in use in many countries, although thresholds vary across markets.
In Europe, the reported limit is £100 in the United Kingdom. In France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Germany, the limit is set at €50.
In the United States, there is no national standard for contactless payments without PIN entry. Banks determine their own transaction limits.
The updated contactless payment limit in Türkiye will take effect on January 15.
