Nearly half of people in Türkiye will skip a summer holiday this year, a new survey shows, as rising living costs squeeze household budgets.
The May 2026 "Pulse of Türkiye" survey by MetroPOLL Strategic and Social Research found that 24.4% of respondents plan to go on holiday this summer, while 47.3% said they will not travel. Most of those staying home cited financial reasons for their decision.
The survey indicates that demand for holidays has begun to recover in recent years, but soaring costs continue to shape travel decisions. Around 61% of respondents believe prices at domestic holiday destinations have increased beyond normal levels.
Only 10% of minimum wage earners said they intend to take a holiday this summer, while the figure rises to 56% among those earning at least four times the minimum wage.
The share of respondents expecting to spend more than their entire monthly income on a holiday jumped from 16.3% in 2022 to 38.5% in 2026.
The survey found that 38% of respondents have given up taking holidays altogether because of financial reasons.
Among those who still plan to travel, 54% said their holiday expenses exceed their budget. Meanwhile, 17% have reduced their holiday budget, 15% shortened the length of their trip, and 13% switched to lower-cost accommodation.
Price is the biggest factor when people choose a holiday, with 36% putting affordability at the top of their list.
