The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has agreed to provide $200 million to Turkish electricity company Enerjisa to help build 250 megawatts of wind power capacity in the southwestern province of Mugla.

According to the Bank, the funding forms part of Enerjisa’s 1-gigawatt wind development portfolio planned across Türkiye, and the project is expected to generate about 630 gigawatt-hours of electricity each year while preventing roughly 221,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Wind project integrates climate goals with local economic benefits

In addition to expanding renewable capacity, the investment will fund a vocational training and certification program designed to reskill workers from the coal sector. The initiative, to be created through a new qualification centre, will prepare participants for roles in renewable energy, agriculture, and tourism.

The bank stated that Enerjisa’s investments will support Türkiye’s net-zero pathway, ease pressure on fossil fuel use, and improve overall energy security.

EBRD Head of Energy Eurasia Sule Kilic said the Bank aims to help scale up clean energy capacity in Türkiye while ensuring that communities benefit from the transition. Kilic noted that the wind project will bring "cleaner and cheaper electricity" and contribute to wider social outcomes.

Enerjisa expands its renewable footprint

Enerjisa Uretim Chief Financial Officer Mert Yaycioglu said the company sees renewable energy as both a growth area and a long-term responsibility. He highlighted the firm’s 4.2 gigawatts of installed capacity and a development pipeline of at least 1.5 gigawatts, describing partnerships with institutions such as the EBRD as essential for advancing Türkiye’s energy transition.

Founded in 1996, Enerjisa is Türkiye’s largest electricity generation and distribution company, jointly owned by Sabanci Holding and German energy company E.ON. The company operates a diversified generation portfolio that includes hydroelectric, natural gas, wind, and solar assets, and it generated ₺190.58 billion ($5.81 billion) in revenue in 2024.

The EBRD is an international financial institution jointly owned by the European Union, the European Investment Bank, and 71 governments. The Bank is one of Türkiye’s largest institutional investors, having committed more than €23 billion across over 500 projects and trade finance facilities since 2009, with most investments directed to the private sector.
