Electric and hybrid automobiles comprised 42.9% of Türkiye's car market during the January-May period, with total sales reaching 169,246 vehicles, meaning 4 out of every 10 cars sold in the country are electric or hybrid.
According to data compiled from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD), automobile sales increased 5.1% compared to the same period last year, reaching 394,327 units in the January-May period.
Light commercial vehicle sales decreased 1.7% to 95,039 units during the same period.
During the January-May period, 189,676 gasoline cars and 109,398 hybrid cars were sold in Türkiye's automobile market.
Diesel car sales totaled 32,960 units, while liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) car sales reached 2,445 units.
Full electric vehicle sales, powered solely by electricity, totaled 59,092 units. When including extended-range vehicles, where a gasoline generator charges the battery and driving is provided by the electric motor, electric car sales rose to 59,848 units.
Gasoline car sales decreased 23.5% in the first five months of the year, diesel cars dropped 16.2%, and LPG vehicles fell 12.1%.
Hybrid car sales increased 102.3% during this period, while full electric car sales showed 114.1% growth.
The main reason for the decline in diesel car sales is attributed to global manufacturers' ongoing process of ending diesel car production, resulting in no new diesel cars being offered to the market.
Gasoline cars' market share dropped from 66.1% in the first five months of last year to 48.1% in the same period this year.
Diesel cars' share fell from 10.5% to 8.4%, while LPG cars' share decreased from 0.7% to 0.6%. Full electric cars' market share increased from 7.4% to 15%, while hybrids rose from 14.4% to 27.7% of total sales during the January-May period.
Among hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrids reached 20,812 sales units, capturing a 5.3% market share.
Compared to the same period last year, plug-in hybrid sales showed a 1,402.7% increase.
In May alone, 16,802 full electric cars were sold, representing a 19.7% market share for that month.
When considering cars as full electric, extended-range electric, and hybrid categories, vehicles containing electric motors comprised 42.9% of the total market, with combined sales reaching 169,246 units.
This data confirms that four out of every 10 cars sold in Türkiye are electric or hybrid vehicles.
