In a historic recognition, "Soke cotton" has become the first cotton from both the EU and Türkiye to receive the prestigious Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status from the European Union. This designation not only honors the product's unique regional characteristics but also ensures its protection from imitations and boosts its economic potential for local producers.
The legacy of Soke cotton is woven deep into Türkiye’s agricultural and maritime history. In the 1830s, the sails of Ottoman ships were crafted using yarn spun from Soke cotton. Cultivated in the Aydin province's fertile Soke district since at least the 1700s, this cotton has long been prized for its bright appearance and long fibers—qualities that lend it durability and elegance.
Grown exclusively in the Soke district of Aydin, Soke cotton is known for its fine, strong yarn, vibrant whiteness, and sustainability. Experts note that its superior quality arises more from the unique soil structure and microclimate of the region than from genetics alone. These environmental factors have helped shape cotton’s reputation for centuries.
With this PGI registration, Soke joins other internationally recognized Aydin products such as Aydin figs, Aydin chestnuts, and Aydin Memecik olive oil, strengthening the province’s reputation as a hub of premium agricultural goods.
Ambassador Thomas Ossowski, Head of the EU Delegation to Türkiye, commented on the milestone: "It is a great honour that the first PGI registration for cotton has been awarded to a product from Türkiye. The EU’s recognition plays a crucial role in enhancing the prestige of products, such as this cotton.
With the PGI logo, Soke cotton producers will have enhanced market opportunities and therefore gain more economic power. The PGI logo will help protect this cotton from fraud, and the consumers will know they are receiving the genuine Soke cotton when they see the logo."
Nejat Sagel, head of the Soke Commodity Exchange, emphasized the product’s sustainability and international appeal: "Soke cotton's commitment to environmentally friendly production methods and sustainability, especially with the EU registration, will create great confidence in the eyes of international consumers and business partners. We aim to ensure that Soke cotton obtains the value it deserves worldwide and to establish our region as a leading centre for agriculture.”
Producers echoed the excitement:
