Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein announced Wednesday that Iraq plans to begin talks to import natural gas from Azerbaijan to meet its electricity generation needs.

Minister Hussein made the remarks during a joint press conference in Baghdad following a meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, who was on an official visit to Iraq. “Azerbaijan is a significant gas-exporting country, supplying energy through Türkiye,” Hussein said.

‘We invite Azerbaijani companies to invest in Iraq’

“As Iraq, we aim to diversify our energy investments to ensure stable electricity services,” he stated. “We also invite Azerbaijani companies to invest in our energy sector.”

Hussein voiced support for resolving the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia through dialogue, emphasizing, “Azerbaijan pursues a balanced foreign policy on both regional and international levels. For this reason, it plays an important role in both spheres.”

Commenting on rising tensions between Pakistan and India, Hussein noted that both nations possess nuclear weapons, underlining the importance of resolving disputes through dialogue.

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Bayramov said he and his Iraqi counterpart also discussed regional developments and efforts to stabilize Syria.

“The situation in Gaza is also unsustainable,” Bayramov added. “We are concerned about the escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan.”
