Istanbul generated 29.2% of Türkiye's total Gross Domestic Product in 2024, reaching ₺13 trillion ($305 billion) in economic output and maintaining its position as the country's dominant economic powerhouse, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) on Thursday.
The commercial capital's gross domestic product (GDP) figure represented nearly three times the output of second-ranked Ankara, which recorded ₺4 trillion ($93.8 billion) and a 10.5% share of the national total.
Izmir placed third with ₺2 ($46.9 billion) and a 5.7% share.
The five provinces with the highest GDP share collectively accounted for 53.0% of Türkiye's total economic output in 2024, underscoring the concentration of economic activity in the country's major urban centers.
At the opposite end of the scale, Gumushane, Ardahan and Bayburt recorded the lowest GDP figures, with ₺41 billion ($962.1 million), ₺35 billion ($821.3 million) and ₺28 billion ($657 million) respectively.
Istanbul also recorded the highest GDP per capita at ₺802,000, roughly edging out Ankara's ₺788,859.
Eleven provinces recorded GDP per capita figures above Türkiye's national average in 2024.
Van, Agri and Sanliurfa posted the lowest GDP per capita at ₺203,049, ₺194,660, and ₺188,144, respectively.
Istanbul accounted for the highest share in nearly all economic activities, except agriculture, forestry and fishing, and other service activities.
The city's dominance was most pronounced in information and communication activities at 64.0% and finance and insurance activities at 59.3%.
Istanbul held a 39.8% share in trade, transportation, accommodation and food services; 39.0% in professional, administrative and support service activities; and 27.8% in the construction sector.
Konya led all 81 provinces in agriculture, forestry, and fishing with a 5.6% share, while Ankara dominated other service activities with 44.9%.
Within Istanbul's own economic composition, trade, transportation, accommodation, and food services represented the largest sector at 33.9% of the province's total GDP.
Industry ranked second at 15.1%, followed by professional, administrative and support service activities at 7.2%.
Istanbul also made the largest contribution to Türkiye's 3.3% GDP growth in 2024, accounting for 0.62% points of the increase.
Ankara contributed 0.44% points, and Hatay added 0.16% points.
Erzincan had the largest negative contribution to annual GDP growth at 0.017% points, followed by Kirsehir at 0.012% points and Adana at 0.011% points.
Annual GDP measured by the chain-linked volume index increased 3.3% in 2024 compared to the previous year, with 46 provinces exceeding the national average growth rate.
Adiyaman recorded the highest growth at 31.4%, followed by Bayburt at 17.1% and Malatya at 17.0%.
The strong performance in Adiyaman and Malatya reflects ongoing reconstruction efforts following the February 2023 earthquakes that devastated southeastern Türkiye.
Bilecik, Kirsehir and Erzincan recorded the sharpest declines at 2.4%, 5.7% and 7.9%, respectively.
