Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (ISG), the second busiest in Türkiye and ninth in Europe, broke eight records in a single day Sunday, including those for total passenger volume and number of flights, according to airport authorities.
ISG continues to emerge as a strategic hub for air travel linking Europe, Asia, and Africa. On Aug. 3 alone, the airport served 158,678 passengers, setting a new benchmark for overall traffic in a single day.
Notably, the highest growth was seen in international flights and passengers, indicating a continued rise in outbound and inbound travel.
The airport’s management credits recent infrastructure upgrades with easing growing operational pressures. Last year, ISG launched a Passenger Flow Improvement Project, backed by an investment of approximately €34 million ($39.27 million). As a result, enhancements in both security and passport control systems have made processing more efficient, even during peak times.
Technological and operational upgrades were carried out without disrupting existing traffic, and have significantly improved the comfort and speed of the passenger experience.
Known locally as “the city airport,” ISG benefits from its compact design and proximity to the central districts of Istanbul. These features continue to make it a preferred option for many travelers, especially those seeking convenience over size.
The airport connects Istanbul and its surrounding regions to 148 destinations across 53 countries, operating 39 domestic and 109 international routes.
