January's unemployment ticks up to 8.1% in Türkiye

Türkiye’s unemployment rate rose to 8.1% in January, up from 7.8% in December, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) said Friday.

The number of unemployed people aged 15 and over increased by 73,000 to 2.82 million, according to the data.

Unemployment stood at 6.6% among men and 11% among women.

Employment and labor force contract

Employment declined sharply in January, with 516,000 fewer people working compared with the previous month. The total number of employed fell to 32.95 million.

The overall employment rate dropped to 47.9%, including 65.3% for men and 30.9% for women.

The labor force decreased by 443,000 to 33.77 million, bringing the labor force participation rate down to 52.1%.

Youth unemployment, covering those aged 15 to 24, rose slightly by 0.1 percentage points to 14.3% in January.

The rate stood at 11.9% for young men and 19% for young women.
