Toyota Motor retained its position as the world’s top-selling automaker for the 6th consecutive half-year, with global vehicle sales reaching 5.5 million units in the first half of 2025, according to the company’s financial results released on Wednesday.
The figure marks a 7.4% increase compared to the same period in 2024 and represents the highest-ever first-half global sales total in the company’s history.
Sales in Japan rose sharply by 27.4%, totaling 1 million units between January and June. Overseas markets also showed solid performance, with a 3.6% rise to 4.5 million vehicles.
The figures include sales from subsidiaries Daihatsu, which manufactures minicars, and Hino, a commercial vehicle producer known for pickup trucks—both part of the Toyota Motor Group.
Toyota’s sales in the United States increased by 4.2% to 1.24 million units in the first six months of the year. In China, the automaker reported a 6.8% rise, selling 837,744 vehicles during the same period.
Germany’s Volkswagen AG, Toyota’s closest global competitor, sold 4.41 million vehicles worldwide in the January–June 2025 period. This represented a 1.3% year-on-year increase but fell short of Toyota’s volume by over 1 million units.
With these results, Toyota continued to hold the title of the world’s best-selling automaker for the sixth consecutive reporting period.
