Moroccan government sources have denied that Ankara is holding talks with Morocco regarding the leasing of a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) at the new Nador Port, according to a report by the Moroccan newspaper Le360.
The report assured that no discussions have been initiated with Türkiye regarding this matter, contrary to circulated claims.
In an interview with CNN Turk, Turkish Minister of Energy Alparslan Bayraktar stated that Türkiye is in discussions with Morocco regarding the leasing of a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU).
He explained that the talks could be part of a broader “package” that also includes the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG), noting that Morocco may use this solution to cope with its peak energy demand during the summer months.
These remarks were widely reported by several Moroccan media outlets, which interpreted them as evidence of ongoing negotiations between Rabat and Ankara.
In comments to Le360, government officials denied the reports, confirming that no discussions are currently underway between Morocco and Türkiye regarding the establishment of a floating FSRU unit.
"Several years ago, Turkish operators had approached Morocco to propose leasing floating gas-powered electricity generation stations," an energy sector expert told the outlet.
According to him, this may stem from confusion between different types of gas infrastructure.
He added that, to date, Morocco has not engaged in any official contact with Turkish operators on this matter — nor on the issue of the FSRU — even though Türkiye has already developed similar partnerships in the region, notably with Egypt.
