OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman said the company will not pursue a public listing this year, citing unresolved safety concerns around artificial intelligence development.
Speaking to Fortune magazine, Altman addressed the company's plans for an initial public offering (IPO) and said current safety questions make this an unsuitable moment to proceed.
"Given everything that is happening around safety, I don't think this is the right time to go public, and we also don't feel any pressure to do so," Altman said.
Altman said the industry has entered a new phase and that companies need to act differently to ensure artificial intelligence benefits humanity without exposing anyone to major risk.
"I find it unacceptable to accept a risk of around 10 percent that could lead to the death of everyone by the end of the decade," Altman said.
On the timing of a potential listing, Altman said an IPO will not take place in 2026 and that further safety work remains necessary before the company reconsiders.
Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei has separately called on artificial intelligence companies to slow the pace of frontier model development, citing growing concerns about the ability to control advanced AI systems.
Altman voiced support for Amodei's position in a social media post, saying he agreed that the pace of frontier AI development needs to be brought under control.
"I agree with Dario's view that we need to control the pace of frontier technology work," Altman said.
Neither company has provided a timeline for when safety concerns might be resolved enough to allow an IPO or a change in development pace.
