Streaming giant Spotify said Tuesday it would launch a new "AI Persona" badge in mid-September, clearly identifying AI-generated content producers.

"Listeners have been clear in telling us that they don't like seeing an artist profile that seems human, only to find out that the persona is AI-generated," Spotify said in the statement.

The move is the Swedish company's latest effort to be transparent about how the music on its platform was made, amid growing concern across the music industry over AI-generated content overwhelming streaming catalogues.

In April, the company launched its "Verified by Spotify" badge, signalling that a profile has been reviewed and meets its authenticity standard. "Alongside artist profiles that self-disclose as AI Personas, we will also start applying badges to relevant profiles," the company said.

Spotify will not include AI Personas in editorial or personalised recommendations unless a user follows an AI Persona, it said.

How the badge will be applied

Starting Tuesday, artists could begin disclosing through Spotify for Artists that their profile represents an AI Persona. The company said it hopes artists will be transparent and is giving them the option to self-disclose, but will not rely on self-disclosure alone.

Spotify will also review artist profiles to identify those whose public identity, including name and imagery, appears to represent a photorealistic AI-generated persona. The review will begin with artists who have met certain audience thresholds, so that labels cover the large majority of artist profiles that users visit.

When listeners tap the badge, they will be able to see whether the artist voluntarily disclosed their AI Persona status, or whether Spotify's review team made that determination independently.

For profiles where Spotify's review team applies the badge, the artist will be notified and given the chance to self-disclose or appeal. In the coming months, the company said it also plans to let listeners report profiles they believe represent AI Personas to its review team, with further details to be announced later.

Spotify said that while artists use AI as a creative tool in a wide range of ways, determining whether a profile represents an actual human is a question the company can address more directly.

For information on how a song itself was made, the company points artists and listeners to its existing AI Credits and SongDNA tools.

According to Spotify, artists have shown a strong willingness to use AI Credits to disclose how they used AI in a song's creative process, and the company is hoping for a similar level of disclosure with AI Personas.
