Turkcell, Türkiye’s leading mobile operator and largest data center operator, said it launched international roaming in Syria on Tuesday, with CEO Ali Taha Koc announcing the move on X as he congratulated newly appointed Ambassador Nuh Yilmaz on his first day in office.
In a post on X, Koc congratulated Türkiye’s new ambassador to Syria, Nuh Yilmaz, on his first day in office and wished him success in his new role. Yilmaz previously served as deputy foreign minister.
“On this occasion, I would also like to share that Turkcell has launched international roaming in Syria as of Dec. 23, 00:00,” Koc wrote. “Turkcell subscribers in Syria will be able to use their lines.”
In a comment on the move, newly appointed Ambassador Nuh Yilmaz described it as “making life easier for citizens.”
“This development is both pleasing and life-facilitating for our citizens traveling to Syria. We are on the ground with all our institutions, standing by the Syrian people,” he said.
The news came as Türkiye appointed an ambassador to Damascus after years of reduced diplomatic representation.
International roaming allows mobile subscribers to continue to use the mobile telecom services when travelling from their home countries to abroad.
Mobile subscribers may initiate and receive voice calls, send and receive SMS, and surf the web by connecting to the mobile network of the operator of the country in which they are found.
Turkcell has roaming agreements with over 500 operators across over 200 destinations. Turkcell effectively manages commercial relations, concluding over 200 agreements per year.
With the affordable cost structure ensured by commercial agreements, our company provides the offer ‘Your Tariff is Valid Abroad’ to its subscribers in 172 countries.
