A Turkish Airlines flight traveling from Istanbul to Barcelona landed safely after a passenger triggered a bomb alert by creating a Wi-Fi network name containing a threat, a company official stated.
The incident occurred on flight TK1853 as the aircraft was approaching Barcelona, prompting the implementation of standard aviation security protocols. The flight crew ensured a safe landing at Barcelona El Prat Airport, where local authorities boarded the plane to conduct a full inspection, according to Turkish Airlines Communications Director Yahya Ustun in a post on X.
Following a thorough inspection by Spanish officials, no explosive devices or hazardous materials were found on the aircraft.
"Necessary security searches were carried out by the relevant country's authorities, and no adverse findings were detected," Ustun said in another post..
Ustun stated that efforts had been initiated to identify the passenger and to carry out the necessary legal proceedings.
He added that, despite the disruption, the return leg of the flight from Barcelona to Istanbul was expected to operate as scheduled once passenger boarding was completed.
Turkish Airlines currently operates direct flights to six destinations in Spain: Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, Bilbao, Valencia, and Seville.
