Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye (CBRT) saw its total reserves swell by $5.1 billion during the week ending Aug. 14, pushing the overall figure to $183.5 billion, while carry trade volume surged past previous peaks to hit a fresh record of $62.4 billion.

Gross foreign exchange reserves stood at $71 billion on Aug. 7, the previous week's reading. Gold reserves also racked up a solid gain, adding $990 million to reach $108.33 billion from $107.4 billion.

Net reserves climbed $4.2 billion as well, landing at $67.1 billion. Excluding swaps, that net figure still ticked upward to $54.3 billion over the same stretch.

Foreign investors rotate out of bonds

Overseas investors acquired $176.1 million in equities and $445.9 million in private-sector bonds during the week ending Aug. 14, while disposing of $306.2 million in government domestic borrowing notes.

That rebalancing ended a nine-week consecutive period of net foreign purchases in the bond market. Since the start of the year, net inflows into Turkish equities have reached $1.6 billion, while government bond markets have attracted $2.4 billion over the same period.

As a result, foreign equity holdings rose from $40.8 billion to $41.7 billion week-on-week. Government bond holdings declined from $18.5 billion to $18.1 billion, whereas private-sector bond holdings expanded from $4.1 billion to $4.5 billion.
