A Turkish construction company, 77 Insaat, has laid the foundation for a major renewable energy project in Afghanistan’s Herat province, with plans to build a 200-megawatt wind power plant—the first of its kind to be led by a Turkish firm.
The first phase of the project will generate 43.2 megawatts of electricity, supported by an initial investment of $65 million.
The foundation ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials from Afghanistan's interim government, including Deputy Prime Minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and several cabinet members.
Türkiye’s Consul General in Herat, Sinan Ilhan, and the Chairman of 77 Insaat, Suleyman Ciliv, were also present at the event.
Emre Unal, Türkiye’s commercial counselor at the embassy in Kabul, highlighted that Turkish companies have so far invested nearly $7 billion in Afghanistan across various sectors.
He underlined that firms from Türkiye have contributed to both infrastructure and superstructure development in the country.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Unal noted that “projects developed by our companies are not only crucial for Afghanistan’s current needs but also for the foundation of its future.”
He emphasized the strong reputation Türkiye holds in Afghanistan, saying that the trust in Turkish products and engineering gives Türkiye a strategic edge in expanding trade and investment.
He also pointed out Afghanistan’s competitive advantages for investors, including low business establishment costs, customs duty exemptions, and access to a young and cost-effective labor force.
Unal stated that Türkiye’s Ministry of Trade continues its efforts to enhance bilateral trade and investment with Afghanistan.
The country’s rich natural resources and growing need for energy infrastructure make sectors such as energy, mining, construction, healthcare, agriculture, and livestock particularly appealing to Turkish investors, he added.
