Russia has announced plans to modernize at least 75 airports by 2030, creating new opportunities for Turkish construction companies as Western firms have withdrawn from the Russian market following the Ukraine conflict.
Türkiye's Ministry of Trade informed the construction sector about the potential business prospects in a briefing note, highlighting that Turkish firms could fill the gap left by Western companies that exited Russia after the crisis began.
The ministry indicated that Turkish companies can establish contact through the Moscow Trade Councillorship to explore these airport modernization projects. Russia ranks first among countries where Türkiye conducts overseas construction projects, a relationship spanning more than 50 years.
According to Trade Ministry data, Turkish construction firms have completed projects worth $103.1 billion in Russia to date. Türkiye's contracting sector ranks among the top 10 countries globally in terms of annual international contracting revenues.
Since 1972, Türkiye's overseas contracting sector has undertaken 12,627 projects worth $543.6 billion across 137 countries. Road construction, tunnels and bridges account for the largest share at 14.1% of Turkish contractors' international projects.
Housing projects follow at 13.4%, energy plants at 8.5%, railways at 7.1%, and commercial centers at 6.8% of overseas work.
The Turkish contracting sector generated $6.2 billion in international business during the first months of 2025, with an average project value approaching $66.5 million. During this period, Turkish firms secured 378 projects.
In 2024, 43 Turkish companies were listed among the world's 250 largest international contractors, demonstrating the sector's global competitiveness.
