Türkiye’s Karpowership, a subsidiary of Karadeniz Holding, has signed a contract with Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity to deploy a new floating power plant project with a capacity of 590 megawatts (MW) in the Basra region, the company announced on Wednesday.

Under the agreement signed on Aug. 6 between Karpowership's affiliate, BKPS, and the state-run Southern Electricity Generation Company, two of the company’s power ships will anchor at the Khor Al Zubair and Umm Qasr ports to supply electricity to the southern part of Iraq.

Iraq’s power grid strains; Karpowership offers relief

The ships are scheduled to begin generation within August, the company said.

The initial contract has been set for 71 days, but it may be extended if Iraq’s electricity demand persists. The arrangement is designed to help address the country’s recurring power shortages, particularly during periods of high seasonal demand.

Last week, much of Iraq lost power as soaring temperatures of up to 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit) drove heavy use of air conditioning, exposing the country’s fragile electricity system, which is strained by underinvestment, worsening heat waves, and reduced gas supplies from Iran, Bloomberg reported.

Suppyling up to 100% of power demand in 16 countries

Zeynep Harezi Yilmaz, chief commercial operations officer of Karpowership, said the company already meets between 10% and 100% of electricity demand in 16 countries across four continents.

“We are ready to provide fast and reliable solutions to the growing energy needs of the Middle East,” she stated. “The project we will implement in Basra with our affiliate BKPS is another concrete example of our contribution to global energy security.”

Karpowership operates a fleet of 50 floating power plants with a combined installed capacity exceeding 10,000 megawatts, according to its website.

The company is widely recognized for providing mobile energy solutions to countries with limited infrastructure development, where rapid deployment of electricity generation is needed to stabilize power supply.
